I read in a magazine the rules for getting a bicycle for your child. The first rule is: don't buy one your kid will grow into; buy one in which he/she can reach an inch short of the ground. Last month, we looked for Srinidhi's next bike in several places; we saw several girl's ones, but not boy's! Apparently they are hot items, and fly off the shelf as soon as they arrive. So we had to get this one that is bigger for him by 5 inches! But he seems to like it!! He is totally comfortable, and rides well. Two problems though: first, he needs our help to climb, and second, if he is stuck, he cannot push against the ground and move, he needs us to push the bike.

ஸ்ரீநிதிக்கு சென்ற மாதம் புது சைக்கிள் வாங்கினோம்; சற்று பெரியதுதான், தரை எட்டவில்லை. பெண் குழந்தைகளுக்கான சைக்கிள் நிறைய உள்ளது, ஆண் குழந்தைகளுக்கான சைக்கிள்கள் வந்தவுடன் விற்று தீர்ந்துவிடுகிறதாம். ஆகவே, சற்று பெரிதானாலும் இதை வாங்கினோம். அவனுக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்துவிட்டது, நன்றாக ஓட்டுகிறான். ஆனால் என்ன, தானாக ஏறி உட்கார முடிவதில்லை. நாங்கள் ஏற்றிவிட வேண்டும். அதேபோல், நின்றுவிட்டு உந்தி கிளம்ப வேண்டும் என்றால், உந்த முடிவதில்லை. நாங்கள் உதவ வேண்டும்.

Surprise Birthday Party !!!

Some of my friends must be expecting something else when they read the title :-) No, this is not that. This is a surprise birthday party we arranged for Vasu, back in 2002. That year, we had a string of spectacularly-surprise birthday parties.



Vasu did not suspect why Shan was unusually prolonging the tennis session. When we were done and came to our home, only to be surprised to see Sridhar, Vidya and Veena at the door, shouting 'Happy Birthday'!

Yeah.. It was one of the memorable moments for all of us. Vasu didn't anticipate that. Hope to celebrate all our birthdays like this in the years to come !!

DC Trip With Akka (Day 2)

அக்காவுடன் வாஷிங்டனில் இரண்டாவது நாள். (முதலாவது நாள் இங்கே). காலையில் கோயில் சென்றோம்.


We met with Gerald and family, and all of us went to Mt. Vernon estate of George Washington. We spent good bit of time there.

இருநூற்றி ஐம்பது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு ஜார்ஜ் வாஷிங்டன் வாழ்ந்த வீடு.

After the trip to Mt. Vernon, Gurpreet dropped us at the Lincoln memorial. Lakshmi akka's son Vivek had come to see us there. (He works for National Institute of Health in Maryland.) It was such a busy day, it was impossible to take a picture alone with the president :-) Akka reminisced of Aththan's visit to the same place several years ago and the photo he brought back.

அமெரிக்க ஜனாதிபதி பயணம் செய்யும் அணிவகுப்பு, பயிர்ச்சியில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்தனர். காருக்கு முன்புறம் அருகில் பைக்கில் இருக்கும் போலிஸ், அப்படியே நல்ல்தம்பி சித்தப்பாவை போலவே இருந்தார்! அக்காவும், நானும் ஒரே சமயத்தில் அதை சொன்னோம்.

At DC Reagan National Airport, heading back to Charlotte. That concluded a busy weekend of sight seeing for Akka.

வாஷிங்டன் ரேகன் ஏர்ப்போர்ட்டில். இத்துடன் இரண்டு நாள் வாஷிங்டன் பயணம் முடிந்தது. இரண்டு நாளில் அவசர அவசரமாக நிறைய பார்த்து விட்டோம். இன்னும் நேரம் இருந்திருந்தால் இன்னும் நன்றாக இருந்திருக்கும்.

Last week this time, I was holed up at a remote IBM site in New York state with my coworkers Trevor and Kevin for some rare weekend work. No, no, this is not that IBM site; this is New York Steakhouse, where we stopped by for beer and dessert, after successfully completing the task.
